Why was the battle of Normandy so important to allied victory?

The battle of Normandy was important to allied victory since it was the first time that the allied force attacked the Germans on European soil. This was the start of the long struggle to push the Germans back to Germany and led to the end of the war. Prior to this time, the Germans had occupied all of France. The landing at Normandy was comprised of U.S., Great Britain and Canadian troops. All three nation's troops were needed to gain a foothold on the continent and start the long push back to Germany.
